Here the guys are clearing the hole from which the gill nets are set and retrieved. The holes are anywhere from sixteen to twenty inches in diameter. Typically they're cut using a hand auger and a long chisel. The tops of the holes are carefully chipped back to provide a relatively smooth surface that won't damage the nets as their pulled. Then, any ice shavings that remain in the hole are shoveled out to provide as unobstructed working area as possible
